Big 12 football: Sooners may have lost their chance at title

NORMAN, Okla. — The Red River Rivalry took a big hit in terms of national significance after both Texas and Oklahoma lost last week.
Even as painful as the Longhorns’ demoralizing loss to Kansas State might have been, the Sooners lost more in their fourth-quarter meltdown at Colorado. OU’s 27-24 loss likely cost it a shot at a national championship.
The Sooners aren’t likely to get much traction from a victory over No. 19 Texas on Saturday. And that could be the highest ranked team the Sooners face the rest of the season.
The Sooners say they still have plenty to play for in the Red River Rivalry. The two schools have accounted for the last eight South Division titles, with the Sooners winning five of them.
“We both know there’s a lot on the line,” OU wide receiver Malcolm Kelly said. “Rankings don’t matter. This is a big game every year because of the nature of the game.

Instant Analysis: Oklahoma-Colorado
The Oklahoma Sooners didn’t look ahead to Texas. They simply gave away the game they were dominating. The Colorado Buffaloes — after hesitating — decided to accept the donations that came their way, and a bombshell was born in Boulder.

In the most shocking upset of the young season, the No. 3 team in the land lost a 24-7 second-half lead to a scuffling program looking for any remote sign of hope. The homestanding Buffs never gave up, scratching and clawing on every single snap in a profound display of gritty determination. But at the end of the day, the simple and sober fact is that the Sooners handed this game to Colorado on a silver platter. An extended sequence midway through the fourth quarter told you all you needed to know about this mind-boggling affair, which took a big bite out of next week’s Red River Shootout in Dallas.
As for OU, the Sooner Schooner got grounded on an afternoon when nobody expected it.

UT Students Line Up For Tickets To OU Game

The University of Texas Longhorns take on the Oklahoma Sooners Oct. 6, and on Wednesday UT students were waiting in line outside the stadium for tickets.
The game brings out the best of college football rivalry, and everybody wants to be there for the showdown.
Students were issued green wristbands to be a part of a lottery. Only 2,000 walked away with tickets. Those who did say it was worth the wait.
Both teams are ranked in the top ten.

High-powered Sooner offense hopes to keep rolling against Colorado
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops isn’t counting on his Sooners piling on the points this weekend like they’ve been doing for the last month.
The Buffaloes (2-2) and linebacker Jordon Dizon, the nation’s leading tackler, have stifled their last two opponents, limiting Florida State to 221 yards of offense and Miami of Ohio to 139.
“They’re one of the better defenses last year that we played against and one of the better ones we’ve seen again all this year,” Stoops said. “They’re solid and physical. I think Dizon is one of the better ‘backers, for sure, in the league.”
This will, however, be the first game Bradford and Sooners running back DeMarco Murray will have played outside the state of Oklahoma.
“It’s going to be fun being at someone else’s house,” Murray said.
Not if Colorado’s defenders have anything to say about it.

Bomar Returns To Oklahoma To Face OSU
It’s been more than a year since Rhett Bomar was dismissed from the OU football team for taking money for work he didn’t do. He returns to the Sooner state this weekend, bringing his new team, Sam Houston State, to Stillwater to face the OSU Cowboys.
Bomar has beaten OSU once in his career, in 2005 as the starting quarterback for the Sooners. He’ll try to duplicate that result Saturday with the Bearkats.
Bomar ranks sixth nationally in total offense, has completed 69-of-111 passes for 819 yards and tossed eight touchdown passes.
Bomar’s new team is 2-and-1 and coming off a 41-38 loss two weeks ago against fourth-ranked North Dakota. Sam Houston State has never beaten an NCAA Division I Bowl Subdivision opponent.

NORMAN (AP) — No. 3 Oklahoma has looked like a well-oiled machine while mowing down its first four opponents in blowout fashion. So it should be no surprise that Sooners coach Bob Stoops believes his team has been “robotic” in its approach to football so far.

“I say it in a positive and complimentary way, they’ve been really very robotic in how they’ve gone about their business and the way they’ve practiced, the way they’ve prepared, and just their attitude overall,” Stoops said Tuesday.

“He wants us to improve, and I think we are going to improve tremendously just listening to what coach Stoops said and listening to our other coaches. We’ve just got to listen and just take care of business.”

“We don’t pay attention much to what the other team’s doing or how they’re acting or stuff like that,” Murray said. “We know we have a goal to put points on the board, have fun doing it and continue to work hard.”

Boulder — When talking about Saturday’s homecoming game against third-ranked Oklahoma, coaches could use Colorado’s new starting middle linebacker as an example of, well, playing Smart.

With LSU winning  by less than 2 TDs and Florida barely holding on against 1-2 Old Miss, it is time for the voter’s to realize what we already know.  OU is at least the no. 2 team in America….maybe No. 1 if USC stumbles again tonight.

Stoops sees similarities to great teams, but `it has to keep happening’
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) – Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday the No. 3 Sooners have shown some early signs of mimicking his championship-caliber teams of the past.
Stoops also said the Sooners have benefited from depth that has made players realize “if you’re not playing to the level we feel you’re capable of or that we need, then maybe another guy needs his opportunity.”
“But I think more than that,” Stoops said, “there’s just a pride factor, and we’ve developed some really positive habits of going through the week and how we compete and how we get ready.”
