Bomar Returns To Oklahoma To Face OSU
It’s been more than a year since Rhett Bomar was dismissed from the OU football team for taking money for work he didn’t do. He returns to the Sooner state this weekend, bringing his new team, Sam Houston State, to Stillwater to face the OSU Cowboys.
Bomar has beaten OSU once in his career, in 2005 as the starting quarterback for the Sooners. He’ll try to duplicate that result Saturday with the Bearkats.
Bomar ranks sixth nationally in total offense, has completed 69-of-111 passes for 819 yards and tossed eight touchdown passes.
Bomar’s new team is 2-and-1 and coming off a 41-38 loss two weeks ago against fourth-ranked North Dakota. Sam Houston State has never beaten an NCAA Division I Bowl Subdivision opponent.

“Coach Dan Hawkins and his staff have a really good team. They have played a lot harder schedule than a lot of people. That is obvious when you are on the road at Arizona State and hosting Florida State. There are not a lot of teams willing to do that. I think they are a very tough team, and last year I thought they were one of the better defenses in our league and in the country. This team does a really good job of being a tough, physical team defensively.
“Offensively, their quarterback situation with Cody Hawkins is different from a year ago. He is much more of a threat throwing the football and they are doing that more and more. They have good running backs and they have a lot of motion. They are a very disciplined offense. Defensively, we have to handle all of their motion and be in the proper positions. We have had a lot of training for it leading into this game.

(4) Oklahoma at Tulsa

Sooners, Tulsa bring top offenses into clash

The in-state matchup will feature two of the nation’s top four offenses, with Oklahoma (3-0) featuring a more conventional approach and Tulsa using the frenetic no-huddle scheme offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn never got to use in his days at Arkansas.
The Golden Hurricane (2-0) have averaged 559 yards — the fourth-highest mark in the nation — and last week gained 595 yards in a 55-47 shootout win against BYU. The problem has been a defense that’s given up nearly as much — 486 total yards and 184.5 on the ground per game. A fourth-quarter stand and five takeaways allowed Tulsa to overcome 694 yards allowed in a 55-47 victory against BYU last week.
Tulsa has the most potent offense the Sooners have faced so far, but the Oklahoma defense figures to provide the biggest test of the season for the Golden Hurricane.

Sooners Hit The Road For Friday Game

Friday’s game at Tulsa may not be much of a trip but offensive
coordinator Kevin Wilson is expecting a loud and rowdy crowd
cheering for the Golden Hurricane.
It’s also the first start outside Norman for freshman OU
quarterback Sam Bradford.

Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, who threw for 255 yards and three touchdowns against Utah State on Saturday, is third in the nation in passing efficiency.

OKLAHOMA FOOTBALL NOTES

NORMAN, Okla. — Tulsa coach Todd Graham can forget poring over tape this week to try to figure out Oklahoma’s early offensive strategy after Friday’s 7 p.m. kickoff.
“I don’t tell anybody what we’re doing until our first play and sometimes I don’t even know until I sit down [in the press box],” Wilson confessed after Saturday’s 54-3 victory over Utah State, a game OU led 38-3 at the half.
“I think I have enough confidence in our skill-position players and our line and the way our quarterback is playing that I don’t want to go in there feeling like my hands are tied behind my back,” he said.

Rare Friday night game means short week for No. 4 Oklahoma
The made-for-television matchup has fourth-ranked Oklahoma (3-0) playing on a Friday night for only the second time since Big 12 play started in 1996 and the first time since the 2002 season opener was also played at Tulsa.
Before that, the Sooners’ last Friday game was the last of a series of day-after-Thanksgiving games against Big Eight foe Nebraska in the 1995 regular-season finale.
